We recently connected with an administrator at Mount Airy Primary in Westmoreland, Jamaica. The update we received was difficult to hear. Several classrooms were destroyed during Hurricane Melissa, including the one shown in the photo. The roof is gone, the walls are exposed, and the space where children learned every day is no longer usable.
Mount Airy is doing everything possible to reconnect with students in January. The dedication of the staff speaks to the strength of the community, but the road ahead will be challenging. Many families are still recovering, and the school needs support to create a safe and stable return for the children.
Education is a core part of StarterBlox Foundation’s mission. We believe in the long-term value of giving children the tools and environment they need to learn and grow. The situation at Mount Airy reminds us how fragile that opportunity can be, and how important it is to help restore a sense of normalcy for these students.
In the coming weeks, we will work with the school to identify the most immediate needs we can help meet. Even small steps can make a real difference when a community is rebuilding.
